Fictional Concept Study
Amselgrund
A one-page site for a small neighbourhood veterinary practice — our study in answering 'are you open?' before a single line of copy does.
01 Overview
A neighbourhood vet practice runs on a narrow, irregular week — and the question that interrupts a consultation is always the same one: are you open? Amselgrund is our study in answering that before a single word of copy is read.
A small practice's whole week is irregular — mornings daily, afternoons only three days, closed at weekends — and that one detail decides whether the phone rings mid-appointment or not at all. Most practice sites bury it in a paragraph, if they publish it at all, and treat every species beyond dog and cat as a generic afterthought.
So we built the week itself as the first thing the page shows — a live status line and a seven-day strip that knows what day it is — and gave rabbit and rodent exactly the same typographic weight as dog and cat, because that's the practice's actual range, not a footnote. One number, one online-booking button, carries the rest.
Amselgrund isn't a real practice. It's a design study — the vet, the team, the address and every figure on the page are invented to explore an idea, not to stand in for a client.

02 Art Direction
One photograph, three frames. A doorway, a beam of afternoon light and a rabbit sitting exactly where a patient would wait — read at different distances instead of restaged three times.
The hero holds the whole scene — a bare consulting-room floor lit by one low window, nothing staged, nothing clinical in frame. The warmth carries the trust a photograph of equipment never could.
A tighter crop on the same beam, cut for the portrait frame the mobile hero actually ships — the animal stays legible instead of shrinking into an abstraction.
A slice of the same frame at its darkest — the doorway and wall that carry the header type at a measured 14–16:1 contrast, checked pixel by pixel before a single word was set over it.
03 Type & Colour
One warm display serif carries every headline with real character — Fraunces across its full range of optical size and softness — a quiet humanist sans stays out of the way, and the palette holds one clay accent to a single meaning: action, or today.
The ground is warm chalk paper, not clinical white — measured to keep normal text at 15:1 contrast or better. Clay is the one accent and means exactly one thing, action or today, never decoration. Green is reserved for the live open-status signal alone — deliberately not the brand colour, and deliberately not medical blue.

- Open live status only, never brand #2e6b3d
A serif with real warmth at display size, a sans that carries every working sentence without asking for attention.

04 Desktop
The page reads like the practice itself: the week first, then what actually happens in the room, then the fact that a rabbit gets exactly as much care as a Labrador, then the people you'll actually meet. Nothing is dressed up to look bigger than a four-person practice.
-
01 Sprechzeiten
A seven-day table with today marked and a booking card beside it — the exact same week the hero already showed, so the page never contradicts itself.
-
02 Leistungen
Six services set as an editorial grid, each one flagged when it also applies to rodents and rabbits — so the range reads as a fact of the practice, not a special addendum.
-
03 Heimtiere
The species list gets its own dark page set at headline size — Kaninchen and Meerschweinchen exactly as large as Hund and Katze, because that's the actual positioning, not a claim.
-
04 Team
Four initials, four names, four roles — the same faces a visitor will actually meet, set as plainly as the opening-hours table above it.
05 Mobile
'Habt ihr offen?' gets typed into a phone mid-walk, not researched at a desk. The narrow screen keeps the live status line and the booking button in the first screen, before the photograph has even finished loading.
-
01 Der Einstieg
The photograph becomes a fixed band above the fold instead of a full-bleed wall — the live status chip sits directly under the headline, answering the one question before any scrolling happens.
-
02 Leistungen
Six services stack single-column with the same species flags intact — nothing about the range gets simplified away to fit the width.
-
03 Anfahrt
Address and the two-click map sit directly under the practice's own opening hours, so getting there and knowing when to go stay on the same screen.
Same restraint, one thumb — the week and the button stay first, however far the page runs.
06 The Craft
Amselgrund isn't real. The week it answers to is.
This is how SYNCUP builds a practice site that answers the one question a caller actually has — before they've read a single sentence of copy.
Everything you just scrolled — the live week, every species set at equal weight, the honest four-person team — is what we bring to a real veterinary or animal-care practice. Yours would carry your hours, your team and your name.
Praxis Amselgrund is a fictional practice — a design study by SYNCUP Agency. The practice, its vet, its team, its address and its contact details are invented and don't represent a real business.
